How to Plan Your Wedding in Hull & East Yorkshire

Hello! My name is Aaron, I live in the lovely seaside village of Aldbrough near Hull, with my wife Ellie and our cat Poppy.

I now know first hand the crazy happy and crazy busy journey that is planning a wedding! I’m so lucky to have married my lovely other half, Ellie, this August. Over the last five years, I’ve photographed countless weddings in Hull and East Yorkshire. Working at some of the best venues with some of the finest suppliers in the region, I’ve learnt a lot and I can’t wait to share it all with you in this guide!

Here’s my ultimate guide to planning a wedding in Hull & East Yorkshire – Please share this with anyone you know that’s soon-to-be or recently engaged!

Choose Your Season

First — pick a season. Unless there’s a specific reason you want a certain date, being open to a few dates over a few months will save you a lot of stress. The best venues (as well as photographers) are booked for prime dates about 2 years in advance. That means if it’s 2018, I’m pretty much booked for every Saturday from May – September in 2018 and 2019. There’s also usually money to be saved by picking a late Autumn or Winter date – some of my favourite weddings have been in the bright orange and brown shades of Autumn.

Top Wedding Venues in Hull & East Yorkshire

Here are some of my favourite wedding venues in the area — they are in no particular order. They all come with a venue planner/day of coordinator that will remove so much stress from your planning.

The Barn at Willerby

One of the newest and quickly becoming one of my favourite venues in Hull, The Barn at Willerby has it all! Fully licensed for ceremonies, a gorgeous modern barn setting and a fully stocked bar. Nestled within a rural part of Willerby, just a few minutes from the main road but quietly nestled away it has the best of both worlds, with accommodation just 5 minutes away.

I’ll let the photos do the talking, check out the slideshow below!

Oaklands in East Yorkshire

Located on one of the largest woodlands in rural East Yorkshire, the Oaklands wedding venue provides an ideal location for festival style weddings. Designed to accommodate brides and grooms’ unique wedding ideas, this outdoor wedding venue is best known for the magnificent celebration tents that create an intimate, romantic atmosphere with decor like fairy lights and paper lanterns. The Oaklands wedding venue is perfect for couples looking for a unique wedding experience and the chance to create their own bespoke wedding day.

Barff House Country Weddings

Barff House is the gorgeous combination of a Georgian country manor house, a rustic converted barn and a garden marquee, all set in the picturesque East Yorkshire countryside.  The first-ever wedding at this venue was my brother in laws and the second… was my wedding! It goes without saying that this venue holds a special place in my heart.

Here’s a quick slideshow I made from my own wedding!

Tickton Grange

Sitting among four acres of gorgeous grounds and gardens, the Tickton Grange Hotel allows couples to plan their bespoke weddings with support from their knowledgeable wedding coordinator and accommodating chef. This Yorkshire wedding venue hosts small weddings with less than 50 guests and larger weddings up to 150 guests, has 21 bedrooms available to guests at a special rate, and is fully licensed to hold civil marriages and partnerships. Tickton Grange offers tailor-made wedding packages with plenty of choices for your wedding menu and a private bar for celebratory drinks. Couples can enjoy the exclusivity of the Tickton Grange and a late reception until 1:00 am so they can celebrate with their friends and family all night long!

Where to take photos in Hull & East Yorkshire

The plus with all of the venues mentioned above is that you don’t even need to leave the venue for photos. There are lots of locations on site for photos of the family, wedding party, and you two.
If you need a few more ideas (or potentially ideas for an engagement session) then I would suggest a quiet lane or field on the route between your church and reception location. Or if you’re having your wedding at one location then head out for a short walk or drive to a quiet spot nearby. Even a quiet lane or hedgerow overlooking some fields can be the perfect spot!  For engagement sessions we are spoilt around Hull and East Yorkshire, from Danes Dyke, Flamborough Lighthouse and Thornwick Bay on the East Coast to the Humber Bridge, Country Park and East Park in Hull there are countless gorgeous spots for relaxed couples photos.

Wedding Day Timeline

The venues will help you with the official timing of the day, but an ideal summer wedding timeline goes something like this:

9am
Hair and makeup

1/2pm
Ceremony
(quick 10 minutes of couples photos just after the ceremony whilst guests are making their way to the reception location or grabbing a drink from the bar)

2/3-5pm
Drinks reception
(perfect time to get the group photos done whilst the rest of your guests are enjoying a drink)

5pm
dinner, speeches
(Another quick 10 minutes of photos to catch the sunset after dinner)

7pm
Evening guests arrive, cut the cake &  first dance

8pm+
 paaaarty

Depending on your venue, they’ll recommend where you put your speeches. I see it work best just before the meal.

Some of the Finest Wedding Suppliers in Yorkshire

I’ve had the pleasure of working with some of the best wedding suppliers and vendors in our region. Over the last few years, I’ve cultivated a list of the very best people who will go above and beyond for your special day. These people have never let me down and are truly at the top of their professions.

Flowers – Bloom & Bridal

Let’s kick things off with flowers!

Jennie and Joanne (the amazing sister duo of Bloom & Bridal) are masters of their field. I would think of them as artisans rather than florists as each arrangement is lovingly made, and I feel is a work of art in its own right. If you’re looking for something that’s a little bit different or something that you can’t find at your local florist then give Jennie and Joanne a call!

Caterers – Eat Me Drink Me

I have personally tasted a fair quantity of Eat Me Drink Me’s gorgeous food, from fish and chips to crème brûlée, they have created some of the finest wedding food I’ve ever tasted! They should definitely be on your list if you value good quality food for your special day.

Marquees – Village Farm Marquees

Outstanding customer service and attention to detail I how I’d describe Tony & Chrysta’s approach to supplying gorgeous marquees for weddings. I was so impressed having worked with them for the last few years that I hired them for my own wedding this August! You can’t give a better recommendation than that!
